The Best Time to Visit the Dolomites
Visit in January to March for the most complete winter operation, from late June to September for the broadest summer access, and in early autumn for colour and quieter trails only if you accept shorter days and progressive lift closures. May and November are beautiful but structurally limited.
The calendar in one view
| Period | Best for | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| December | Festive atmosphere and early winter | Snow and terrain can be uneven early in the month |
| January | Quieter skiing and cold conditions | Short days and deep cold |
| February | Full winter operation and family holidays | Peak prices and school-holiday crowds |
| March | Longer ski days and terraces | Lower slopes can soften |
| April | Late skiing in selected areas | Rapid closures and inconsistent valley conditions |
| May | Lower walks and quiet villages | Many lifts, hotels and rifugi closed |
| June | Fresh summer and opening lifts | Snow can remain on higher routes |
| July | Broad summer access | Crowds and afternoon storms |
| August | Full operation and events | Highest pressure on roads, trails and hotels |
| September | Clearer rhythm and early autumn | Shorter days and some closures |
| October | Colour and quiet | Lift and hotel closures accelerate |
| November | Near-total calm | Limited hospitality and mountain infrastructure |
Exact season dates vary by valley, altitude and year. Use official lift and hotel calendars for the travel week.
Winter: December to early April
December
December offers festive villages, hotel openings and the first full winter weeks. Early December should not be marketed as guaranteed complete skiing across every sector.
Snowmaking supports many major areas, but natural conditions, links and lower slopes vary. Christmas and New Year bring high demand.
Choose December for atmosphere. Choose January or February when network completeness matters more.
January
January is often the most considered ski month after the holiday peak. Temperatures can be very cold, days remain shorter and some shaded sectors feel severe.
The reward is a more settled winter rhythm and, outside event weeks, less pressure than February.
Choose January for confident skiers, couples and travellers who value skiing over terraces.
February
February provides broad winter operation and is a classic family period. It also coincides with school holidays across several European markets.
Reserve early, especially for slope-connected hotels and ski school. Expect higher rates and busier lunch venues.
March
March brings longer light, stronger sun and excellent terrace days. Snow quality becomes more dependent on altitude, exposure and time of day.
Start early and select terrain intelligently. March can be the best winter month for a mixed group that wants both skiing and a softer social day.
Early April
Some areas continue into April, but operation narrows quickly. Easter timing changes demand.
Do not book an April ski trip based on a resort-wide headline alone. Verify the exact lift sector and hotel dates.
Summer: late June to September
June
June is one of the most attractive but misunderstood months.
Lower valleys can be fully green while snow remains on high trails. Lifts reopen on different dates, and early-month access can be partial.
Choose late June for fresh landscapes, longer days and a calmer start, but retain alternative routes.
July
July offers broad lift operation, open rifugi and long days. It also brings heat in the valleys and regular afternoon-thunderstorm risk.
Start mountain days early. Do not treat a sunny breakfast as a full-day forecast.
August
August has the fullest tourism infrastructure and the greatest pressure, especially around the Italian Ferragosto period.
Roads, famous trailheads and terraces can be busy. The month remains excellent when the hotel is chosen well and the itinerary begins early.
Avoid designing every day around the most photographed place at the busiest hour.
September
September is one of the best months for experienced visitors.
The air can feel clearer, the peak family period has passed and early autumn begins. Days shorten, temperatures fall and some services reduce later in the month.
Choose early to mid-September for a sophisticated summer trip with fewer crowds. Check the last lift carefully.
Autumn: late September and October
Autumn colour, low light and quiet villages can be extraordinary. It is also a period in which the tourism machine progressively closes.
A successful October trip requires:
- a hotel confirmed open;
- direct restaurant checks;
- a car or precise transport plan;
- lower and flexible walks;
- no assumption that summer lifts still run;
- warm and waterproof clothing.
Photographs of golden larches do not show the closed cableway or dark restaurant.
Spring: late April and May
Spring is the most limited planning period.
Snow can remain at altitude while valley paths are wet or closed. Many lift systems, rifugi and seasonal hotels pause between winter and summer.
Visit in May for:
- quiet villages;
- lower-altitude walking;
- food, wellness or a specific open hotel;
- a wider Italy itinerary in which the mountains are not the only objective.
Do not visit in May expecting a standard high-mountain holiday.
Best month by traveller
For skiing
February for the broadest family operation; January for quieter cold-weather skiing; March for longer and more social days.
For a first summer trip
Late June, July or early September.
For hiking
July through September, with route choice adjusted for snow, storms and shortening light.
For cycling
Late spring through early autumn depending on pass conditions, event closures and heat. Serious road cycling requires live traffic and weather checks.
For families
February in winter; July or early August in summer when infrastructure is fully operating.
For luxury hotels and spas
Peak winter and summer provide the broadest choice. Shoulder-season retreat stays can be excellent only when the property is definitely open and the limited outside programme is intentional.
For lower crowds
January outside holiday weeks, late June, early September and selected October dates.
For photography
Seasonal light matters, but access comes first. Early winter, September and October can be beautiful; do not enter closed or unsafe terrain for an image.
Best time by base
Cortina
Strong in both winter and summer. September can be excellent for a town-and-walking trip; major-event periods require early planning.
Alta Badia
Peak winter for skiing and high summer for walking. Food-led hotels can make shoulder dates work when their restaurants and lifts align.
Val Gardena
January to March for skiing; late June to September for Seceda, Alpe di Siusi and valley walking.
Alpe di Siusi
Summer meadow season and winter cross-country or gentler skiing are the defining periods. Road and cableway calendars are decisive.
Canazei
Winter for the Sella circuit and summer for pass access. Avoid assuming every pass or lift operates at the edge of the season.
Weather reality
The Dolomites do not have one forecast.
A day can differ by valley, altitude and side of a pass. Use local mountain forecasts, lift webcams and official warnings. Build the itinerary so the clearest day carries the most important route.
In summer, early starts reduce thunderstorm exposure. In winter, wind can close high links even when the village is calm.
Prices and availability
The highest demand commonly sits around:
- Christmas and New Year;
- February school holidays;
- major sporting or cultural events;
- late July and August;
- Ferragosto;
- highly publicised openings.
The lowest price is not always the best value. A cheaper shoulder-season room may sit inside a destination with closed lifts and limited restaurants.
A note on 2026 and 2027
The Dolomites’ profile is elevated by major winter-sport events and new hotel openings. Event calendars can change road access, availability and rates well beyond the competition days.
For future dates, verify event-specific restrictions and never copy a 2026 seasonal schedule into 2027.
Our final choices
- Best winter all-round month: March.
- Best summer all-round period: late June to early July.
- Best quieter summer period: early September.
- Best for autumn atmosphere: early October, only with an open-property plan.
- Period most likely to disappoint an unprepared first visitor: May or November.
The best time is the period in which the infrastructure required by your trip is actually open.
