Alpe di Siusi
Alpe di Siusi is the broad landscape of the Dolomites: a high plateau of meadows, winter tracks and long sightlines beneath Sassolungo and Sciliar.
The first decision is not which hotel to book. It is whether to stay on the plateau or in the villages below.
The short answer
Stay on the plateau for: sunrise, quiet, ski-in access, walking from the door and an immersive hotel stay.
Stay below for: road flexibility, village life, easier arrival and more evening choice.
Why choose Alpe di Siusi
The official destination describes Seiser Alm or Alpe di Siusi as Europe’s largest high Alpine pasture, covering 56 square kilometres. Its open form is unlike the tighter valleys elsewhere in the range.
The landscape is especially effective for families, relaxed skiers, winter walkers, runners and summer visitors who want movement without making every day a high-alpine expedition.
Winter
The plateau offers wide pistes, cross-country skiing, winter walking and an atmosphere that is generally gentler than the high-energy circuit bases around the Sella.
It connects with Val Gardena, but guests should not assume that every day must become a circuit day. Alpe di Siusi is strongest when appreciated on its own terms.
Staying high can make the first and last light exceptional. It also makes the hotel more central to the evening because options are limited and road access is controlled.
Summer
Summer is the plateau’s defining season.
Official information places its walking terrain roughly between 1,800 and 2,300 metres, with extensive marked routes. Families can find accessible paths, while stronger walkers can build longer days toward surrounding peaks and valleys.
Start early for quieter paths and more stable weather. Respect protected landscape rules and working pastures.
Access and private cars
When the Seiser Alm cableway is operating, private traffic toward Compatsch is generally restricted from 9:00 to 17:00. Guests of authorised accommodation may have different arrival arrangements, but these must be confirmed with the hotel.
Do not arrive casually during the restricted period expecting to drive to the door.
The cableway from Siusi reaches the plateau in about 15 minutes. Operating dates and hours change seasonally.
Where to stay
On the plateau
Best for immersion. COMO Alpina Dolomites is the leading contemporary luxury resort directly on Alpe di Siusi. Other high-level properties and smaller mountain houses offer different degrees of seclusion.
Ask about:
- permitted arrival time;
- parking;
- luggage transfer;
- dinner choices;
- late arrival procedure;
- child spa access;
- which lifts operate in the chosen season.
Below the plateau
Siusi, Castelrotto and nearby villages provide road access, restaurants and daily flexibility. The cableway then becomes the gateway to the high landscape.
Where to eat
The plateau is strongest at lunch, when huts align naturally with walking and skiing. Guests staying high should understand whether dinner is hotel-based and whether any outside option requires advance transport.
Who should choose Alpe di Siusi
- families;
- couples wanting calm;
- walkers and runners;
- relaxed skiers;
- guests happy to let a hotel shape the stay;
- photographers and landscape-led travellers.
Who should choose elsewhere
Choose Selva or Corvara for direct high-mileage ski logic. Choose Ortisei for a town with easy plateau access. Choose Cortina for social life and varied mountain sectors.
