Restaurants in the Dolomites
A good dining plan in the Dolomites follows the mountain, not a generic list.
Lunch may depend on which lift is open. Dinner may require a driver over a dark pass. A celebrated hotel restaurant may be excellent and still be the wrong reservation for a group staying forty minutes away.
Three kinds of table
The destination dining room
These are restaurants around which an evening is planned. Reserve early, confirm the current format and arrange transport before the table.
The hotel table
In the strongest mountain houses, dinner is part of the reason to stay. Half-board can simplify a winter week, but ask how often menus change and whether the main restaurant is the same one promoted in the hotel’s press material.
The rifugio
A rifugio is not simply a rustic lunch stop. The best combine location, local cooking and the pleasure of arriving under your own power. Access, last lift and weather are part of the reservation.
Where the food story is strongest
Alta Badia
Alta Badia has built an unusually serious identity around Ladin cuisine, ambitious hotel restaurants and mountain huts. It is the easiest valley in which to make food a central theme without sacrificing ski access.
Cortina d’Ampezzo
Cortina offers a broader town dining scene, from historic rooms and wine bars to high-altitude lunches. The choices are spread around the valley, so transport matters.
Val Gardena
Val Gardena combines Tyrolean, Italian and Ladin influences. Ortisei is easier for a walkable evening; Selva and the slopes reward a more location-led plan.
Alpe di Siusi
The plateau is strongest in daylight: huts, broad views and long lunches. Guests staying high should understand evening options before arrival.
A useful shortlist
The current Michelin Guide should be checked at publication, but names regularly relevant to a Dolomites dining plan include:
- La Stüa de Michil at Hotel La Perla, Corvara;
- Anna Stuben at Gardena Grödnerhof, Ortisei;
- Tivoli, Cortina d’Ampezzo;
- SanBrite, near Cortina;
- St. Hubertus at Aman Rosa Alpina, subject to its current operating format;
- mountain and hotel restaurants across Alta Badia.
Do not publish a star count without checking the current Michelin edition. A restaurant may close seasonally, change chef or alter its format.
Booking well
- Confirm the precise address and transfer time.
- Ask whether the tasting menu is mandatory.
- Check dietary requests before the day.
- For lunch on the mountain, know the last lift and alternative descent.
- Never drive after drinking on mountain roads.
